The ASA Newsletter series has now been updated for the 2006 spring article about Recruitment via the NRMP. The most recent review about the numbers graduating and the composition of the residencies is the 2006 Fall Article. These newsletter articles are the versions submitted for publication. There are sometimes minor discrepancies when compared to the published versions due to editing.

These articles are based on information provided by the National Residency Matching Program (NRMP). The articles summarize the trends in recruitment via the Match into anesthesiology.

They include tables showing numbers of residents recruited from different sources as well as the numbers entering residency programs in each state.

ASA November Newsletter Articles about Recruitment

These articles are derived from information provided by the American Board of Anesthesiology (ABA) and, for the years 2001 to 2004, by the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists (AANA).

The articles record the numbers of residents in each year, the numbers graduating and, for the years 2001 to 2004, the numbers of nurse anesthetists graduating and getting licensed.

Tables of Match Results for Medical Schools:

These tables show the number of students graduating from each school who matched into the PG1 and CA1 Anesthesiology years, compared to the total number using the NRMP for all the specialties at that school.

Tables of Match Results for Each Residency:

These tables show the number of applicants matching to each Anesthesiology Residency via the various routes provided by the NRMP. The first four numerical columns show the critical values: the positions made available and filled for the CA1 and PG1 years. For most programs these columns sum to make the totals in the final two columns. This is because there are very few people matching into anesthesiology either in the Physician category or via the PG1 Preliminary Match.

These tables provide aggregate data about the residency programs in each state.

The Table shows the Number of Positions available via the Match, the Number Filled, and The Percentage Filled.
