Alan Walter Grogono (b. March 28, 1935 in London)

Author

I grew up in England in Woodford, Essex and went to Oundle School and the London Hospital Medical College. At King's College Hospital while studying anaesthesia I was having lunch with two dental students, one of whom was Anthea (December 4, 1961 - remember it well). Within ten weeks we were engaged and on August 19th, 1962 we got married. (It is a pleasure to thank Don Sustendal and Tom Carville for pointing out my error - before they corrected me, I had printed August 19, 1992. They thought a thirty year engagement would have been a record!)

Until June 30, 1998 I was Chairman of the Department of Anesthesiology at Tulane University in New Orleans and held the Merryl and Sam Israel endowed professorship. In November 1997 I completed my term as President of the Association of Anesthesiology Program Directors (1995 - 1997) and became the Immediate Past President. Nine months into retirement we relocated to Hilton Head Island, South Carolina.

Also, until June 30, 1998 Anthea was an Associate Professor of Dentistry at the Louisiana State University School of Dentistry. On Hilton Head Island, she practices as a volunteer dentist in the "Volunteers In Medicine" clinic and has recently been appointed co-director of the dental clinic.

My professional interests include designing equipment, teaching Acid-Base Balance, including maintaining a Web-Site devoted to teaching about Acid Base Balance, and reporting in the ASA Newsletter about the trends in recruitment into anesthesiology. My interests outside medicine serving on the local Boys & Girls Club Board. I enjoy creating artistic mobiles - several of which have been displayed in the Art Show at the Annual Meeting of the ASA. In the past, during the years 1977 through 1982, thanks to brother James, we established and successfully defended the "B Class" world sailing speed record in Icarus - the hydrofoil-born Tornado.

I have recently developed an interest in developing websites. This grew from making the Magic Squares Section of this website - devoted to the science and art of creating Magic Squares. It has extended into the other sections on this site and to the various websites listed on the Websites Page. Anthea and I continue to sail. We own a 36' PDQ Catamaran (with our friends the Timsons) which we keep in Hilton Head Island. Our four children, David, Sally, Martin and Ann have all miraculously migrated to the same city - Austin Texas. We see them fairly frequently.
